1. The Mere-Exposure Mirror Paradox
In 1968, psychologist Robert Zajonc formulated the Mere-Exposure Effect: human beings subconsciously prefer stimuli they encounter most repeatedly. Because you have spent decades looking at your horizontally inverted reflection in mirrors, your brain has mapped that flipped version as your "normal" face.
However, everyone else in your life—your friends, partner, colleagues, and camera lenses—sees your non-inverted, true face. When you see a standard unmirrored photograph, it feels momentarily unfamiliar not because it looks bad, but simply because it violates your lifelong mirror habituation.
2. Wide-Angle Barrel Distortion (24mm vs 50mm)
Standard smartphone front-facing selfie cameras and laptop webcams use ultra-wide lenses with equivalent focal lengths between 22mm and 26mm. When you sit 40–50cm away from your laptop during a Zoom meeting:
- Central Magnification: Your nose, forehead, and central cheekbones are magnified up to 30% wider relative to the rest of your skull.
- Peripheral Compression: Your ears, jawline, and hairline are compressed and pushed backwards.

3. Video Call Eye-Contact Parallax
During video calls, human instinct compels us to look directly at the other person’s eyes on our screen. But because the webcam is mounted 5–10 cm above your screen, looking at the display creates a persistent downward gaze (the "lowered eyelid effect"), projecting disconnection or fatigue.
