1. Mirror vs Reality & Psychological Perception
In real life, people see your true, unmirrored face with natural 3D depth and focal distance (equivalent to 50mm human vision from 1.5 meters away). When you look in a bathroom mirror, you are seeing a horizontally inverted reflection. Because human faces have natural micro-asymmetries (eyebrow arch, hairline part, cheek contour), your brain becomes habituated to your flipped reflection through the Mere-Exposure Effect. In 1968, psychologist Robert Zajonc formulated the Mere-Exposure Effect: human beings subconsciously prefer stimuli they encounter most repeatedly. Almost certainly not. Eye-tracking cognitive studies show that when people look at you, their gaze fixates on the "eye-mouth triangle" to read emotion, expressions, and social cues. 2. Camera Optics & 50mm Focal Length De-Warp
Webcams and smartphone selfie cameras use short focal length, ultra-wide lenses (equivalent to ~24mm). Because of spherical distortion and perspective projection, whatever is closest to the lens (your nose, center of forehead, and chin) is magnified by up to 30%, while your ears and jawline recede backward. VERA mathematically counteracts this curvature with WebGL shaders.

3. Facial Symmetry, Lighting & Color Science
In the Studio Drawer, switch to the Symmetry & Facial Analysis tab. You can test Left + Left Mirrored, Right + Right Mirrored, and Natural True View. Studies in visual perception suggest most people have a "dominant expressive side" (often the left side due to right-hemisphere emotional processing). Our analyzer calculates your symmetry score and Golden Ratio harmony in real time.
Harsh overhead ceiling lights cast deep shadows under your eyes and nose. VERA includes a calibrated Screen Ring Light that turns your display into a high-CRI soft light emitter. You can choose from Warm 3200K (golden glow), Studio 4500K (clean neutral), Daylight 5600K (vibrant daylight), and Rose Glam (soft blush).

4. Video Calls, Zoom Presence & Eye Contact
During video calls, human instinct compels us to look at the other person’s eyes on our screen. But because the webcam is mounted 5–10 cm above your screen, looking at the display creates a persistent downward gaze (the "lowered eyelid effect"), projecting disconnection or fatigue.

Video call apps combine three unflattering elements: (1) wide-angle 24mm lens barrel distortion, (2) low-angle laptop placement looking up toward your chin, and (3) inverted or non-inverted dissonance. 5. Camera Permissions, Troubleshooting & Privacy
When you first load the site, your browser asks for camera access. If you accidentally clicked "Block" or dismissed the prompt, follow these quick steps:
Chrome, Brave, Edge & Opera (Desktop):
- Click the padlock or tune icon (site settings) on the left of your browser address bar (next to
vivapreception.vercel.app). - Locate Camera and toggle it from Block to Allow.
- Click the Reload / Refresh button on your browser.
Apple Safari (iOS / Mac):
- On iPhone/iPad: Tap the aA icon in the address bar > tap Website Settings > set Camera to Allow.
- On macOS: Open Safari Preferences > Websites > Camera > set

Windows & macOS System Permissions:
Make sure your OS allows browser applications to access the webcam: on Windows, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera > Allow apps to access your camera.
The app has a built-in Interactive Studio Simulation Demo. When camera access is blocked, denied, or unavailable (e.g. webcam in use by Zoom or permissions not granted), VERA automatically falls back to this procedural 2D canvas simulation so you can still experiment with focal lengths (24mm vs 50mm vs 85mm), lighting, and mirror flips.
To switch to your real face, simply unblock your camera in your browser address bar and click Enable Camera.
On Windows and some Mac systems, a webcam can only be claimed by one application at a time (producing a NotReadableError). Make sure to quit Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord, OBS Studio, or FaceTime, then refresh VERA TrueView.
